Getting more website to ones site or blog is one of the most challenging tasks that any marketers face in their daily life. Many of them have lost a significant amount of search traffic over the past 1-2 years, and are constantly looking for creative ways to drive tons of traffic to their site once again.

This article on 30 ways you can drive traffic to your site is an effort to give people like YOU (online marketers and business owners) a whole list of straight-to-the-point, actionable step-by-step instructions for getting free traffic to your site or blog.

Although some of the strategies shared here will not be a quick fix, you will be surprised how quickly many of these tips start to generate results for you.

Traffic Tactic #1: Be Persistent

be-persistentSummary: The number one reason why most internet marketers, bloggers, and entrepreneurs are successful most of them is that they are ‘persistence.’ Building traffic to your website often takes a long time. You simply cannot do for a few weeks and then not do it again.

Benefit: To drive more traffic to your site, having the ‘right’ mindset is very important.

Step by step Instructions:

  1. Understand this: building up consistent traffic to your site takes a lot of time. It will not happen overnight or within few weeks.
  2. Apply all the traffic tips shared in this blog posts regularly. Try to spend at least 1 hour a day to build traffic to your website.
  3. Set goals, monitor your traffic on a regular basis, and make sure that it is growing.
  4. Understand another thing: getting on the first page of Google may take several months, especially if you have a new website or if you are targeting a competitive keyword(s).
  5. If traffic to your site is not growing, then you need to analyze what you have been doing and try to understand where you are going wrong – do not repeat the same thing if they are not working.
  6. If you are stuck, consider getting a personal mentor for yourself. Maybe you can join an online group. They can look at your website and tell you where you are going wrong and help improve traffic to your website.

Traffic Tactic #3: Use Counter on Your Site to Analyze Your Website Stats

Summary: If you do not already have a StatCounter on your website, please install it now. If you have StatCounter, learn how to use it to learn about your website traffic and set measurable goals for improvement.

Benefits: By using a website stats counter, you will be aware about your traffic to your site, the keywords they are searching for, and the pages they visit, and also how long they stay there, and many other things…

Step-by-Step Instructions:

stat-counterIf you do not have a StatCounter follow these steps to install it:

  1. Visit http://www.StatCounter.com and sign up for a free account.
  2. Click on Add New Project and enter your website information
  3. Click Install Code and select the invisible counter as it looks more professional, and click Next. Ask for the default installation guide, and click Next.
  4. Copy the code and paste it into a text editor (notepad for e.g.)
  5. Download your index.html from your server. For this, login to your http://www.yoursite.com/menu where your website.com is your actual domain name, and using a FTP either program or file manager.
  6. Open your html file with notepad. You will see some HTML code.
  7. Scroll down the bottom of the page until you see </body></html>
  8. Paste your StatCounter code just before the </body>
  9. Save your index file and upload it to you server

That completes the installation of StatCounter. Wait for few days to allow the StatCounter record information about your visitors on your website. Do you have StatCounter already installed on your site? Follow these steps:

  1. Login to your StatCounter and click on your site project. Look at the stat summary of the previous week or month. Jot down how many unique visitors you have on your site per day (blue bar) on average. Also, note down how many page loads (green bar) you have per day on average. Establish a goal to increase this number within next month. For example, if your traffic to your site is less than 100, set a goal to double it in next month.
  2. Next, click on Came From and look at all the sites that are referring visitors to your site. Are they coming through organic searches (search engines such as Google)? Article directories? Forum profiles? Blogs? Doing this will help you realize whether your marketing effort has been effective or not and give you an idea where most of your traffic is coming from.
  3. Then click on the Keyword Analysis What are the most common keywords that people are using to find your site? Are there anything surprising? Is there anything you could do to improve that?
  4. And then click on Exit Links. What pages most traffic are using to exit your website? Are they leaving to other sites through your affiliate links? If not, then try to investigate why they might be leaving. Is there anything you could do to improve that?
  5. Finally, click on Visitor Paths. This lets you see exactly how your visitor navigates through your website.

So, you see, checking your website stats on a regular basis will often provide you with a valuable information about how your visitors (traffic) see your website. Try to check your website stats at least once per week and also set targets for improvement.

Traffic Tactic # 4 – Get a Backlink from the High PR Website

  1. Visit http://www.photocase.com/en/ (PR7)
  2. Register by clicking the button on the upper right hand corner
  3. After registration, go to the My Photocase tab where you will see a drop-down-menu; select the link that says “Show My User Profile”
  4. Create your anchor text link to your site – http://www.yoursite.com/ – and place it in the comments section.
  5. After submitting your comment, you will be able to see your keywords. This is the ‘public’ view of your links. If you want to promote multiple links to your website, go ahead and take advantage of that feature.

Let me assume that you have tried several forms of marketing methods. Now, let me ask you one simple question: which one did you like the best?

For me, it was on-page search engine optimization, or SEO, and spent all my energy on publishing web pages around a particular keyword using different SEO tactics. I was highly interested in SEO, so I quickly became expert at that. It brings me over 1000s of visitors every month (a lot of my web pages are 4 years old).

So, it’s your turn now. Sit down and jot down which forms of advertising and promotion you would like to do. Here are your choices…

  • Article marketing

  • Blogging
  • Link trades
  • Forum marketing
  • Blog posting
  • Traffic exchanges
  • Ezine advertising
  • Outsourcing any or all of the above (outsourcing would also be a great thing to master)

Here is how it works: you earn credits by viewing other people’s websites and spend those credits on banner advertising or displaying your websites to others. Unfortunately, many people use traffic exchanges incorrectly. Here are few tips on how to use traffic exchanges to grow your list.

Benefit: You will build/grow your list for free.

Step by step instructions

  1. Join Traffic Hoopla for free. The website list the current top traffic exchanges, which will help you build a downline. Why building a downline? Well, building downline in traffic exchanges means that eventually you do not want to surf to earn credits as you will earn credits when your downline surfs.
  2. To join, first ‘login’ to Traffic Hoopla and click the “1st Join” button. From the list, choose the top 5 traffic exchanges to join. When you join these traffic exchanges, enter your referral IDs in Traffic Hoopla and save them.
  3. Then login to each of the 5 traffic exchanges individually and enter your URL to promote. Then you will have to surf at least 10-20 web pages in order to activate your account. For the URL, choose the combination of your a) lead capture page and b) A Traffic Hoopla Splash page (to build your downline). To save time, you can open each traffic exchange program on a separate browser tab and do your activation surfing of all the exchanges simultaneously.
  4. Congratulate yourself – you have successfully set up an account with the top 5 traffic exchange programs.

Note: It will take some time for you to build up a good downline so that you will never have to surf with credits. Until that happens, you should login every day to all the 5 traffic exchange programs and do half an hour simultaneous surfing as often as you can to build credits.

Summary: Find one of your nearest competitors on the net, do a quick research on their traffic sources, and use one of their strategies on your own site.

Benefit: This way, you will not only learn a lot about your competitors, but also discover a new source of traffic that is already working for them.

Step by step instructions:

  1. Google for your ‘primary’ keywords
  2. Click sites that are top for ‘natural’ searches. (Not the paid ones)
  3. Now you have a list of top competitors, copy their URL and head over to com. Do a search like this: link:domain.com (you will have to replace the “domain.com” with the actual URLs of your competitors. Finally, click search.
  4. The resulting page will show you all the backlinks coming to your competitor’s website. You already know that backlinks are sources of traffic. Now, your job is to click on those backlinks and explore them and research a little bit more about them.
  5. Then, once you have found some good ones, select at least one and figure out how YOU can duplicate this backlink for YOUR SITE.

Benefit: It makes it easier for your website visitors to ‘add’ your site to their Favorites as well as bookmark and share your posts to their social connections. It is also a powerful method of analyzing your website visitor’s behavior – how they are sharing your content and where.

Step by step instructions

  1. Go to AddThis and click on the “Join Now” button.
  2. Register and activate your account. Login and click on “Get Your Button” option. Select your button and then click on “Get Your Code.” The window will display a chunk of code. Copy and paste this code and place it on a prominent place on your website.
  3. You can also customize your button.

Summary: You are going to find out where you are in the search engine ranking pages. After this, you will devise a plan of action to improve your rankings.

Step by step instructions:

  1. If you have never done any search engine optimization on your website OR have never had an SEO service, please do not go past the first step of this traffic tactic. Rather, click here to sign up for my free SEO Course through Email.
  2. First, jot down list of keywords your home page is optimized for. For many people, that could be just one keyword phrase, while for others it would be 2-3 keyword phrases.
  3. Now visit SEO Centro Rank Checker and enter your main keyword, website URL, the access code, and finally, hit the ‘submit’ button. Repeat this process for every keyword in your list.
  4. If your web pages are in among the top 40 positions, they will show up in the results. Preferably, you want to be in the top 10 position so that you are in the first page of search engine results. If you are already on the 1st page, congratulations. If you are not, keep reading…
  5. Jot down the website URLs that are in positions 1, 2 and 11 in Google for your keywords.
  6. Next, go to SEO Centro Link Popularity Checker, enter the three domain names of the competitors that you took note of in the step 5, and click the ‘submit’ button.
  7. See how many backlinks each of these three sites has. This is not an exact science, but at least it will give you an INDICATION of the kind of numbers you need to get for your own website if you want to be in the top 2 positions of the 1st page of Google, or the top of the 2nd page of results.
  8. Repeat step 6 but enter your website URL in the box this time. This will tell you how much backlinks you have to your own site. Jot down the difference between this number and the numbers that you took note of in step 7.
  9. Now that you have an estimate on how many more backlinks you need in order to be at the top 2 positions of Google, or the top of the 2nd Next, you need to spend time building as much backlinks as possible. For this, set yourself a weekly target – i.e. 30 backlinks per week and look at the steps 5, 7, and 8 of this step by step instructions to continue building those backlinks. This will eventually help you gain top search engine rankings for your keyword phrase.

Once a month, check your rankings and your total number of backlinks to your site. Jot down those numbers so that you can keep track of your progress.

If you feel that the competition is too strong, go ahead and choose a less competitive keyword phrase to rank for!

Otherwise, if you are already in the top of Google for your keywords but not getting the enough traffic you may want to reconsider re-optimizing or adding new phrase to your existing page.

Additional information:

If you thought only your home pages bring traffic to your site, you would be wrong. You inner pages or blog posts will also generate traffic. To increase your chances of getting more traffic to your site, you should:

  • Use the free Google Keyword planner tool and find low competitive keyword phrases in your niche. Typically, they have only a few hundred searches per month.
  • Make a new blog post around that low competitive keyword phrase in the blog post title and insert the keyword phrase naturally in the blog post itself.
  • Get at least one backlink to that blog post – i.e. by social bookmarking, posting it in a forum, or including a link in article resource box (as well to your home page).
