Step 1: Improve the layout and design of your site
Having an impressive looking website could be an advantage, but it could also be a problem.
You should make sure that the layout and design of your site are optimized properly for search engine robots.
Ask these questions:
- Does my copy start half way down the page, making it difficult for search engine robots to find and know what my site is about?
- Are there heavy graphics that makes your page load slow?
- Are there too much white space between the lines?

Step 2: Place keywords strategically through your website
Today, especially after the latest Google algorithm updates, placing keywords on the title and Meta tags are not sufficient.
You need to have a certain percentage of keywords (keyword density) within your copy and articles.
Ideally, your most important keywords must be found in the first paragraph – or first sentence to be more exact – of text, and also be used in headlines and hyperlinks.

Step 4: Generate backlinks to your site
If you are trying to rank your site for a highly competitive keyword, niche, or category, you will need quality backlinks pointing to your site, preferably from high quality sites such as those with PR 6 and PR 7, if you can manage.
If you have good content on your site, it will become even easier for you to attract site owners who would be interested to link to you as it provides credibility for their own sites.
But getting others to link to you is a time-consuming process.
While you wait for others to link to you, you can do your own research and start requesting links, the more the better.
Do not overlook that quality will outperform quantity any day in terms of getting a better rankings for your site.
Step 5: Keep yourself up-to-date with SE guidelines
Search engines need to change their rules quite frequently and it is crucial to keep yourself up to date with it.
It is not as hard as it may sound to you as there are plenty of forums and blogs on the net that regularly post information on the latest SEO changes and guidelines.
Just subscribe to those blogs or join relevant forums so that you always know what changes are on the way and what to do about it so that your rankings is not affected negatively – i.e. droppings of rankings.
