7 On-Page SEO That Will Boost Your Website Rankings within 30 Days

7 On-Page SEO That Will Boost Your Website Rankings within 30 Days

On-page SEO is crucial not only for better rankings for your pages and posts but also for a successful internet marketing campaign. This is because every successful campaign starts with your website, and if it is not optimized for the search engine and users (potential customers), your chances of success goes down dramatically.

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is a process that involves everything you need to do in order to improve the rankings of your website (web pages and posts) in major search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing, among others. On-page SEO involves optimizing content within your website, while off-page SEO involves optimization tactics that fall outside the boundaries of your website.

On-page vs. Off-page SEO: Which is Important?

on-page-seoIn order to boost your website rankings as well as add value and trust among your users, you need to perform both the on-page SEO and off-page SEO. But personally speaking, I think on-page SEO is more important than the latter. Here is why:

  1. On-page SEO helps search engine spiders know what your website (web pages and posts) are about and helps boost its rankings in search results.
  2. On-page SEO ensures that your copy is relevant to your major keyword. This will make your users happy once they land on your pages or posts. Off-page SEO may also bring tons of traffic, but if your pages/posts are not relevant (user-friendly) to the search terms, then no one will be happy. You will not get better rankings despite so many traffic come to your website because of the increased bounce rate for the page.
  3. If you are running a website for a local business and only need to get local customers searching for particular terms on Google, then on page SEO is all you need.

So, the first step is to optimize your website properly for search engines (on-page SEO) and then think about off-page SEO. (Check out my post on 7 off-page SEO strategies that will skyrocket your online business.)

There are over 100s of on page SEO factors you need to consider, but for the purpose of this post, I will only explain what I consider are the absolute necessary things you need to change or do in order to make your website SEO-friendly.

Tip #1: Create your content around your “focus” keyword

Summary: Create content (articles or blogs) around major keywords in your industry. For example, if you are in a “make money online” or “self-development” niche, you should at least try to target a lot of keywords you get through Google Keyword Planner tool.

Benefit: Keyword-rich content is useful and relevant to your website visitors. Useful content adds value and trust among your visitors, which will encourage them to take action on your website (click on your affiliate links/ads, sign up for your email list, and/or buy products, etc).

Step by step instructions:

a) Go to Google Keyword Planner tool

b) Type your search term. For example, I typed “make money online”

c) Save the keyword ideas as excel file so that you can refer back to target each keyword in that list

d) Next, create content around each keyword. Tip: Use each keyword in your web page title, 2-3 times in the content body to make it SEO-friendly

e) Remove this keyword from your list and move on to another

f) Do this until your keyword list is empty

Tip #2: Perform on-page SEO on your pages and posts

Summary: You will optimize your content using SEO plugins and ensure your keywords are placed in appropriate elements of your web pages. There are two ways you can optimize your content for search engines: a) Manually or b) using SEO plugins.

If you are a writer, chances are that you will be producing content for your website on a regular basis. In this case, optimizing your content manually will be a time-consuming and tedious task. (I highly recommend that you use these best WordPress SEO plugins to optimize your web pages visually.)

Benefit: On-page SEO is highly important if you want your pages and posts to be displayed higher in search engines because it ensures you pages are properly optimized for search engines. It ensures your contents are relevant and focused around a particular keyword.  The more relevant the content, the more useful it will be for users. This is how Google and other search engines rate your posts.

Step by step instructions:

a) Login to your WordPress Dashboard

b) Under Plugins menu, click on the “Add New” link

c) Search for Yoast SEO (free) or SEOPressor Connect (paid) SEO plugin to perform on-page SEO for your web pages and posts.

d) Next, click on Install and Activate links

e) In your page or post editor, insert your “focus” keyword and the plugin will show whether you have used them in the main elements on your pages such as titles, headers, alt tags, meta tags, body, and so on.

Tip #3: Make your page URL SEO-friendly

Summary: You will replace the vague default URL structure with the most SEO-friendly URLs for your web pages and posts to make it easily crawled by search engines.

Benefit: Your web pages/posts will be easily be found on the internet. SEO-friendly URLs are descriptive and clear, helping search engines understand what the page is about so that they will serve those pages whenever someone type similar search terms. If you do on-page SEO for your pages and posts, while your competitor does not, you will get better rankings for your extra effort.

Tip #4: Provide Valuable Content and Stick to a Posting Frequency

Summary: A website with a good content is always better than a website with proper SEO. Good content is high-quality content that is original, unique, relevant, and useful for the readers. They could be articles, blog posts, infographics, presentations, videos, images, and comments.

Benefits: Providing valuable content that people would pay for it for FREE is an effective way to build trust. Content marketing also opens up lines of communication. When people are engaged with your content, it becomes, even more, easier to invite them to contribute to future programs.

Step by step instructions:

a) Write relevant & useful content for your audience: Do not publish just because you need to produce content on a regular basis. Make sure your content adds value to your readers.

b) Create highly researched content that gets shared: If you are writing about a particular topic, gather as many facts, figures, and useful information around it. Then write your content and make sure it covers all sides of the story. People do not want to read short (500-word) quickly prepared posts, and neither do search engines prefer them. Long articles, on the other hands, rank better than short and hastily prepared posts.

c) Stick to a posting frequency strategy: When it comes to posting frequency, there are two important things to consider: regularly post fresh content on your website, and establish a publishing routine and stick to it.

Tip #5: Optimize your content (Page titles, descriptions, and formatting)

optimize-contentOverview: Among the things that search engines check when reading one of your pages/posts on your website are the page title, description of the page, and the major headings and images. They read these important elements on your pages because they need to know what the page is about and then based on other on-page SEO factors (domain age, PR, the number of backlinks, etc) they will find a spot for your pages and posts in their index.

Benefits: When you optimize your content with proper page titles, description, and formatting, you make your copy appealing to your readers. This will help boost trust, like, and know factor, three essential ingredients that propel online conversions. Search engines also love descriptive and well-structured pages/posts and help rank them better over others that are vague and messy.

Step by step instructions:

a) Optimize page titles: Make each page and posts on your website unique and clear. This will help your readers and search engines to understand what your pages are about. For example, a page with a descriptive title like “Best SEO Practices for 2016” will do much better than a page with the title “index.html”. Insert your keyword at least once (at max, twice) in your page titles to make it relevant to searchers online.

b) Optimize description tags – The second thing search engines and searchers will see in the search result page is your page description. So, you will have to make it catchy, descriptive, and brief (at maximum, up to 150 chars) explaining the readers and search engines what the page is about. This is also your opportunity to advertise your page and convince people to click through to your website rather than watching them go somewhere else on the search result page. Include your keyword or keyword phrase at least twice to make it SEO- and user-friendly.

c) Use proper formatting for your posts– A page or a blog post need to be properly formatted to increase user engagement and experience. Think of your pages as a report that needs to have headings (h1 tag) and sub-headings (h2,h3). Highlight important parts of your report with bold, underline, and/or italics. Use bullet points to list out benefits and features of a product or services.

d) Make it readable. Besides using the formatting above, use proper font size (14px is the best) and short paragraphs (3-4 lines maximum/paragraph).

Tip #6: Freshen up your content on a regular basis to drive more leads

fresh-contentSummary: Search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing love fresh content. Publishing fresh content on a regular basis builds traffic that drives leads to your sales process. That is why so many marketers spend so much time, energy, and money creating fresh blog posts. Also, do not overlook the fresh content on a single page. It signifies to search engines that you have updated the page.

Benefits: Search engines love pages and posts that are frequently updated and visit them often. And the more they visit your page, the more trust you will build with them. This will eventually lead to better rankings for your pages and posts. If you do not update often, however, the search crawlers will extend the time between each visit.

Just look at Wikipedia for example. Almost all of its entries dominate the search engine pages. Why? Because most of its pages are frequently updated.

Step by step instructions:

a) To freshen up your content, add fresh updates such as statistics, results achieved after using a particular product or services, a growing list of projects, comments, and case studies.

b) Pick a handful of the most shared content on your website and find a way to update them regularly. For optimal results, make sure to update these pages at least a few times a month.

Tip #7: Interlink pages & posts within your website for improved SEO

interlink-articlesSummary: Interlinking articles within your website is great for SEO. Interlink pages and posts within your website to increase its value, time spend on your website and a number of pages per visit.

Benefits: Search spiders follow the links on your website. If you do not have any links within the text, they will simply read the text and go. However, if you have links to your pages, they will take notice of that too. This way, search engine will be able to discover other webpages on your website too.

By pointing more links to a particular page on your website, you also let search engines know which pages are important on your website.

Internal linking is also a way to increase time spend on your website and number of page per visit.

Step by step instructions:

a) Insert links in between the content. For example, you could insert relevant posts by including phrases such as “Recommended,” “Related article,” or “See also” in between the major sub-headers of your copy. See screenshot for example.

screenshot-related-articlesb) Insert links to internal pages and post within the text (in-line text). For example, you could create a link to certain keywords phrases in the copy that is relevant or similar to other posts on your website. Simply highlight the keyword phrase and create a link to existing post. If there is none, you could create a new post out of that keyword phrase too.

a) Do not only use keywords for your internal links. Use alternative keyword phrases (instead of always using “weight loss,” use “lose 5 pounds within 7 days,” or “lose weight fast without leaving your desk” etc).

b) Only include a link if it is relevant and useful for your readers.

c) Do not place more than 7-8 links per page/posts. Google look over-linking as “spamming” activity.
