If you don’t have your own product, affiliate marketing is definitely a great ways to make money online today. You can make money online by selling products for 50-75% commissions.

In 2008, over $2.1 billion were paid to small online business owners and blog owners as affiliate marketing fees, making affiliate marketing e of the lucrative business opportunities online.
The best thing about affiliate marketing is that it is very cost-effective, yet the income you will generate through it could help you quit your 9-5 job, live anywhere, and join the new rich.

What does affiliate marketing involve?

Affiliate marketing requires you to have your own site, send traffic to someone else’s site in order to buy their products or services. If anyone buys a product or service when referred through your site, you earn an affiliate commission.

You can either do affiliate marketing on a part-time basis, but many have become so “successful” that they have even made it their full-time job. The interesting thing about affiliate marketing is that you can get in the game within few hours.

But your success in affiliate marketing depends upon how many time and effort you spend on promoting other’s products.

In 2008, over $2.1 billion were paid to small online business owners and blog owners as affiliate marketing fees, making affiliate marketing e of the lucrative business opportunities online.

Here are 5 tips to help you get started with affiliate marketing:

1. Set up a website or a blog

In order for you start as an affiliate marketer, you must have a site where you’ll place links to the products and services you recommend. There are several inexpensive website hosting services such as BlueHost and HostGator.

Alternately, you can also set up a free blog using Google’s Blogger blog network.

The next thing you want to do is buy a domain name for you affiliate blog site in less than $10. I personally use Namecheap and Godaddy to find cheap domain names (.com, .org, .net).

2. Find out about your service/niche

Today, affiliate marketers help entrepreneurs and companies sell everything ranking from cell phones to jewelry and website services to ebooks.

I highly recommend that select a niche you’re familiar with or something you’re interested to learn more about. Not only you’ll more likely to do all the work, but also less likely get “bored” after you see money rolling in.

3. Find offer/product(s) you’d like to promote

There are several affiliate networks to help connect merchants to affiliate marketers who can sell products and services.

Affiliate networks such as, Clickbank, E-junkie and PayDotCom are the major players helping sell digital download products.

Google Adsense, other the other hand, doesn’t require you to make a sale. Your income is generating automatically on a pay-per-click (PPC) basis. That means you’ll get paid just for leading your traffic to click to a merchant’s site.

However, PPC affiliate link usually pays a lot less than affiliate program where your referral must make a sale, though. Just makes sure that your site isn’t peppered with tons of ads with NO authority (it will look like spam).

4. Affiliate Site Content

Here are two major business models you can choose while setting up an affiliate marketing site.

  1. Resource site – These sites contains a lot of “how-to” articles and offer affiliate links and banner ads to learn more about their details. The best way to create a resource site is to frequently add “fresh” content as it gives visitors a reason to return back to your site, and hopefully, click on some of your money-making affiliate links.
  2. Review Sites – You probably have tried out great products in your niche. Now it’s your turn – write an honest review about them to help your site visitors make a good buying decision. (In your product review, include your affiliate link or banner ad that are clicked through to make sales for you on your merchant’s site.)

For both of these sites, you don’t need to spend hours updating content. Just make sure you spend at least 30 minutes twice a week just to let the search engines know that your site is still alive.

Tip: always try to build links in your articles.

5. Attract massive amount of “targeted traffic” to your site

Most people who visit your site/ blog will NOT click on your affiliate links. That is why it’s very important that you employ a mix of marketing tactics just to increase traffic – “highly targeted traffic” – to your site.

There are 4 ways to attract MASSIVE number of targeted traffic to your site:

  1. Paid advertising – This is the most effective way to get more “targeted” traffic to your site. When you place an ad copy with a perfect headline, and a call-to-action message that combines perfectly with graphics, people will be compelled to click through these ads and buy.
  2. Free advertising sites – Sites such as Craigslist and US Free Ads are two popular places where they actually accept your affiliate links and banners for FREE as they’re affiliate marketing sites themselves.
  3. Article marketing – This is another popular method of brining HUGE amount of free traffic to your site. You submit “how-to” articles on sites to build credibility as a “reliable” authority figure in your niche. This will gain you high search engine rankings through high number of links leading to your site and pulling you MASSIVE traffic to your site. Just don’t spam these software engines. Try to work in an organic manner. Ezinearticles is a great place to begin.
  4. E-mail Marketing – Each person who visits your site is valuable, so it makes sense to capture their names and email in order to stay in touch later. That’s because most people won’t click through your affiliate products until the 3rd or the 4th time they hear from you.

So, it’s very important to place a opt-in subscription box on your site to let people start receiving a weekly or monthly newsletter from you.

My favorite email marketing tool is AWeber, although there exist other option too.

6. Learn Affiliate marketing from Forums
